HMS Boxer - Pugilist class FLP.

In late January 2008, I re-discovered a 'virgin' hull of unknown origin which I'd acquired some time ago. Research showed it to be a Sirmar BYMS (1942 british yard mine sweeper) which I found unappealing and unattractive. So HMS Boxer was born, as the lead ship of a futuristic and fictitious 'Pugilist' class.

Comments, observations and details on building HMS Boxer.

The Pugilist class is a new breed of inshore craft designated as FLPs (flexible launch platforms). The missile outfit and electronics are modular and can be replaced in hours. A working crew of 15 makes this hard hitting, highly automated vessel very economical and flexible to operate.

A stand was made, then a 'bath test' used to determine weight distribution. Next the M4 shafts, 'P' frames and rudders were fitted. Bilge keels were fitted next, before the rudder servo, linkages and electrics box were installed. Next came the motors, battery tray and electrics.

Deck bearers were made from 10mm square balsa, which was notched then epoxied and clamped into position. Then the (1.5mm plasticard) decks, coamings and covers were made and fitted. The scale was decided (1/48) before the accommodation, bridge and funnel were manufactured.

Weapons and equipment were then designed, constructed and fitted. Next Halfords grey primer was sprayed on the hull and fittings, before Ford Polar Grey topcoat and gloss black antifouling were applied. Trimlines and finishing touches were then applied to complete the model.
