HMS Exeter - Batch 1 Type 42 Destroyer.


On Monday 29th October 2007 I bid for, and won a static model of HMS Exeter on Ebay. That evening I drove to a village in Worcestershire to pay for, and pick up my prize. This was a scratch built 52inch model, crafted from the builders drawings, over several years by an keen enthusiast.

Comments, observations and details on modifying HMS Exeter.

The hull is a standard Sirmar type 42 fibreglass unit which is based on a scale of 96:1. The builder had fitted 12 inch M4 shafts and twin rudders. Upperworks and detailing are hand crafted in sheet styrene, producing a model which is light and durable.

The original rudders were too small and the maximum rudder angle was too low, so the poop deck was surgically hacked open and the old rudders were removed. The original shafts were too low to accommodate motor alignment and the outboard 'A' frames were just glued to the hull - fine for a static model but not strong enough for using. For these reasons the shafts were removed.

The new rudder posts were fitted, then the hull openings were 'revised' to accept the new shafts. These feature 4 'P' frames which pass through the hull and increase rigidity. Templates were made to aid alignment and ensure that the shafts remained parallel at 5cm centres. Two internal bulkheads were then made from 12mm walnut. Bulkheads were fixed in place using Milliput, then resin was poured in between them.

Next the bilge keels were made (from kitchen worktop joining strips) and fitted. I think these will be required to dampen rolling when on the water. Then a new poop deck was made, fitted and painted, before the rudder servo tray was fitted. Next the motor mounts were constructed and fitted. The battery tray and electrics box were then made and fitted.

After the battery tray was fitted in the hull, all electrical connections were made and tested. Then the upper poop deck was refitted and a new helideck was mounted. A final bath test was made, before Exeter had her maiden voyage on Sunday 30th December 2007. She is very much overpowered, so the battery will be reduced from 12volts to 6volts, but maneuverability is superb and she looks beautiful.
