Grey Wolf - Denny steam powered gunboat.

On Monday 18th February 2008 I bid for, and won a model of Grey Wolf on Ebay. Next day the very kind vendor delivered it, and I was delighted. Grey Wolf is a 'Denny' steam powered gunboat launched in 1942. Only nine were ever constructed and they proved spectacularly expensive and unsuccessful.

Comments, observations and details on building Grey Wolf.

The hull is approximately 920mm x 160mm and Grey Wolf was well made overall. However the motors were poorly mounted and the shafts were badly aligned. After making a stand, the motors were cut out then remounted, before the shaft supports were reinforced and the shafts were realigned. Then two Mtroniks Viper 15 ESC units were fitted.

A receiver tray was constructed and a (7.2v 3.6ah) battery location allocated and prepared. Next came the traditional 'bath test' to adjust ballast and check for watertight integrity. Then a final paint touch up and tidy were required before the maiden voyage.

On Sunday 2nd. March Grey Wolf got her maiden voyage and behaved impeccably. She is silent running and smooth in operation. With 2 ESCs her turning circle is good and with her fine lines she creates minimal wake or disruption. All in all I'm very pleased and she's a welcome addition to the 'fleet'.
